POS System
Another friend of mine owns multiple franchises of a clothing store. The franchisor has a point of sale (POS) system all the franchises used. It was made and maintained by a man in his late 70’s who kept getting hospitalized. It would constantly break down and need him to fix something. So they asked me if I knew how to make something to replace it. This same situation happened with them twice. The first time didn’t work out because they couldn’t get the right to use another software the franchisor didn’t approve.
iOS App
The first time I was able to figure out what they required at the time, we decided on an app that could run on an iOS system, like an iPad. There were other systems like this at the time but they needed something custom to accommodate the reselling prices of the clothing. The stores would buy clothing and they needed to know what price to purchase items for, and what price to sell them for in order make a profit on the transaction. That isn’t built into other systems, which is why they were stuck with the legacy system they had.
Desktop App
The second time they asked me to build this they discussed that the system would need to be able to run offline because the stores often didn’t have reliable internet. For that reason I decided to make it a desktop app with its own database local on each computer. I found that most of the computers they already used were Windows XP, etc. So they didn’t have to buy all new hardware I designed the system to work specifically with those computers.
I was able to create a Electron app that I could install thru a thumb drive on every computer, or send a link to be installed thru. I got the concept created and tested user sign ins and permissions and then stopped. They were on track to get the rights to use this custom software but it fell thru and we had to stop.
